The Tabernacle and the Mercy Seat

The Grace of God in the Old Testament

The Mercy Seat

Nowhere in the Old Testament is the grace of God more evident than in the Mercy Seat. The Mercy Seat was above the ark of the Testimony in the Holy of Holies, and above the Mercy Seat was the glory of God. The Mercy Seat was sprinkled with blood, which signified the forgiveness of sin. Animal blood did not forgive sin, but pointed to the sacrifice that was to come, which would be sufficient to forgive sin and cleanse guilt, the sacrifice of the Messiah. God gave man a way to be forgiven. Man didn’t deserve it.

God owed man nothing. We have been a grief to Him ever since Adam and Eve sinned. But He made us; loves us, and knows us. He knows we have a problem with sin, therefore He provided a way for us to be free from sin. The Old Testaments saints came to Him in the same way that we come to Him today – by faith alone.

Tablets of Stone

God wrote the Ten Commandments
in stone and gave it to Moses
on the mountain.

Covenant of Blood

Moses sprinkled blood on the altar and on the people,
confirming God's covenant with them and
their covenant with God.

Hypocrites

Jesus blasted the Pharisees because of their hypocracy.
They made a show of being religious and righteous
but in their hearts they were far away from God.

Pride and Humility

Man is naturally proud. How can he become humble? The proud man has an elevated view of himself, but if he saw himself rightly he would see that he has nothing to boast about. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God.” The man who sees the poverty in his own spirit will be lifted up.
