The name Jacob means "deceiver." Later, his name will be changed to Israel, which means "he wrestled with God and prevailed." It's amazing that God would use a man like Jacob as one of the Patriarchs. But God knows what He is doing and I can barely understand anything.

Wow! What a con man! Hard to think that God chose Jacob, because he was a very deceitful man. He was a lousy husband, favored two sons so that the neglected ones grew jealous...and allows himself to be deceived. Yet he is still the chosen one of God. But doesn't Paul write that we have no business questioning the wisdom of God? I'm with Paul - it doesn't make sense, so either the story is only partly told (you know...only the bad stuff a person does gets published) or we just have to accept that God had a very round about way of doing things. But I don't think Jacob would be the model person to guide my life by???
Guide your life by the life of Jesus or Paul, not Jacob.
Jacob was a lowlife, in my opinion, however, if you knew all about me, you would wonder why God chose me to be saved. And even more amazing then that, He chose me before I was born! He allowed me to do terrible things up until then; He was patient with me. But at 45 years old, He opened my eyes to the truth. I haven't been the same since.
I think it is okay to question God's wisdom in the sense of asking for understanding. It's even okay to be confused. But it is not okay to judge God's wisdom as if we knew more than God. Read Job 38-41, and God will tell you about His wisdom.
