The World Before The Flood

This is what God said about the world before the Flood: Genesis 6:5-8; 11-12

Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the LORD said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

We can see much violence and corruption today if we look around. And King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, said "there is nothing new under the sun."

If I did my math right, it was about 1400 years after Adam that God caused the flood. This shows His incredible patience with us and His Grace was shown in Noah, who was the only one that walked with god. To me that means He knew the Spirit of God was in Him, probably by some revelation not given to us. When we ask when Christ will come again now, we need to remember that time is a dimension that God created for our benefit, because we can certainly not understand His timing, not seeing the end from the beginning.

I believe there is a difference between when the Spirit of God is "in" someone, and when the Spirit of God is "on" someone. In the Scriptures, when it talks about the Spirit of God coming "on" someone, it is there to lift that someone to a great feat, like Samsom, Joshua, Elijah or Elisha. I think Noah falls into this category. But when the Scriptures discuss the Spirit being "in" someone, it refers to the mystery that Paul discusses; that the Spirit of God would come to dwell "in" us.

On another note, there were others before Noah who walked with God; Enoch for one, Gen 5:22-24. In fact, I believe that possibly the whole line of Seth may have walked with God. Enoch was the only one who was raptured. Let me give you a reason for my thinking about the line of Seth using the age of Methuselah, 969 years.

Early in my Christian walk I calculated, based on the begats from Adam, that it was precisely1,556 years after creation that the Flood occurred. When I worked the age of Methuselah into that timing it came out that he died in that same year that the Flood occurred! This meant that possibly he was not judged like the rest of mankind in the Flood, but died of natural causes before the Flood. This was an amazing calculation to me and I went to a scholar to ask if this is a valid calcualtion. He told me that the name Methuselah means, "he died in the year of the Flood." My mind has been shot ever since.

It was fun communicating with you.

I have wondered about Matthew 5:31-32, because I am divorced. I very much feel I am divorced because of God's will in my life. I look to God and Jesus's direction in all aspects of my life. If I get married again I do not want to feel I am committing adultery.

Dear Debbie,

A failed marriage is no different than any other failure, and God forgives the sins of those who are truly repentant. From your letter, it sounds like you are truly repentant.

Marry again, but stay pure until marriage. Do not compromise God's laws for pleasure or out of desperation. He knows your heart and you needs, and is making plans right now to bless you.

It may have been God's will for you to flee from the marriage. God certainly wants us to live in peace. However, be assured that God hates divorce, Malichi 2:16.
