The men of Israel married the daughters of Moab and began to worship their gods. This idolatry brought God's punishment upon them. The plague killed 24,000 until Phinehas, son of Eleaser, son of Aaron, brought an end to it.
Hi Nate - I think I may be a little confused with today's reading. In Numbers 25:10-13 it speaks of the Lord speaking to Moses in regards to Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest. How the Lord is making a convenant with him of an everlasting priesthood. Then in 26:64 it says there were no man that was numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they numbered the children of Israel. Because the Lord had said that they shall surely die in the wilderness. Oh, wait, is it meaning a direct line of children? Because Phinehas is the son of Eleazar. Eleazar was the son of Aaron. So Phinehaus is grandson of Aaron? It's talking about sons of Moses and Aaron not grandsons?
I'm happy you are looking closely and analytically at these Scriptures.
You are on the right track but look again at Numbers 26, and you will see the following:
Moses numbered the children of Israel in the desert; those twenty and over who were to die out in the desert, this did not count the priests and the Levites, because they had no inheritance in the Promised Land.
It was the children of those who would die out in the desert who would go into the Promised Land with Joshua. They were the children of faith.
